B’luru Symposium: Does Death Penalty Deter Crime?

Bengaluru: Does death penalty (capital punishment) deters crime more effectively than long terms of imprisonment?

The Family Welfare Centre of Archdiocese of Bangalore in association with Prison Ministry India (Bangalore) have put together a symposium on Death Penalty that will dwell on whether is it justice served? Or is it an effective deterrent? Or is it retributive or discriminatory or even arbitrary? The Symposium will take place on March 7 at 3 pm at Paalana Bhavan, behind Archbishop’s House, Jayamahal Extension, Nandi Durga Road.

India has handed out 186 death sentences in 2018 — a 20-year high — the number of capital punishments given out at trial courts in 2019 declined sharply to 102. But the share of death sentences for sexual crimes is on the rise, driven by several state-level sentencing decisions.

Get a legal, human rights and Catholic perspective from authoritative, eminent speakers and legal luminaries. The Inaugural Address will be delivered by Most Rev Peter Machado, Archbishop of Bangalore.

Hon. Justice Kurian Joseph, Former Supreme Court Judge will speak on Imposition of Capital Punishment. Hon. Justice K Chandru, former Tamil Nadu High Court Judge will speak on Death to Death Penalty. Rev (Dr.) Christopher Vimalraj, Professor (Bio-Ethics) and the panel discussion will be moderator by Mr Manohar Ranganathan, Regional Coordinator – Human Rights Defenders Alert.
