Goa: On January 5, 2025, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord marked the conclusion of the Decennial Exposition of the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier in Goa. This significant event, held at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, drew thousands of pilgrims from various backgrounds, all united in their reverence for one of Christianity’s most celebrated missionaries. The culmination of this spiritual journey was a Solemn Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, who emphasized the importance of growing in faith and living as “Pilgrims of Hope.”
The Exposition, which began on November 21, 2024, attracted millions who came to pay homage to St. Francis Xavier, known as Gõycho Saib in Goa. Over 45 days, the relics were venerated at Se Cathedral before being processed to the Basilica. This procession was not just a ceremonial act; it was a vibrant display of community involvement, featuring representatives from various sectors including security personnel, medical staff, and volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success.
Cardinal Ferrão’s homily during the concluding Eucharistic Celebration resonated deeply with attendees. He posed a critical question: “What kind of attitude do we hold towards Jesus?” Drawing parallels between the responses to Jesus from King Herod, the Chief Priests, and the wise men (Magi), he encouraged reflection on personal faith journeys. The Magi’s quest for Jesus exemplified a profound attitude of surrender and worship—an ideal that St. Francis Xavier embodied throughout his life.
In his address, Cardinal Ferrão urged the faithful to emulate St. Francis Xavier’s example by surrendering their lives to Jesus amidst life’s challenges. He stated, “Our journey of faith is unending; it continues in our personal lives, family life… throughout our Archdiocese.” This call to action is particularly poignant as it aligns with the ongoing theme of “Pilgrims of Hope,” inaugurated just days prior on December 29.
The Cardinal’s message was clear: faith is not a solitary endeavor but a communal journey that thrives within families, communities, and parishes. He invited everyone to continue this pilgrimage with renewed enthusiasm as preparations commence for the feast of St. Joseph Vaz—another revered figure in Goan spirituality.
The Exposition was marked by a series of events that fostered community spirit and spiritual growth. Special masses catered to diverse groups including individuals with disabilities and members of the Goan diaspora. A total of 384 masses were celebrated during this period, alongside opportunities for Sacrament of Reconciliation and counseling services.
The Exposition Committee, led by Fr. Henry Falcão, played a pivotal role in organizing a range of activities including a musical opera titled “Porgottnnar,” which depicted St. Francis Xavier’s life and mission. The inclusion of performances by renowned groups like the Shillong Chamber Choir and innovative presentations such as 3D mappings enriched the spiritual experience for attendees.
As the Exposition concluded, Cardinal Ferrão expressed gratitude towards all who contributed to making this event spiritually enriching. “I pray that God may abundantly bless… those who have worked… to make this Exposition a truly spiritual experience,” he said.
The legacy of St. Francis Xavier continues to inspire generations as a model for missionary zeal and unwavering faith. His life serves as a reminder that each individual is called to seek Jesus actively and live out their faith with passion and dedication.
The Decennial Exposition not only celebrated the relics of St. Francis Xavier but also ignited a renewed sense of hope among pilgrims. As they return to their daily lives, they carry with them an invitation to live as messengers of joy and pilgrims of hope—ever seeking Jesus in their hearts and communities.
Deacon Frazer Vaz anchored the whole liturgy while Fr Candido Fernandes, Director of Pastoral Institute, Old Goa animated the liturgy. Avinash Fernandes led the liturgical singing.
Fr Henry Falcão, thanked all those helped in organizing the Exposition. Fr Patricio Fernandes S.J. also expressed his sentiments of gratitude..
