The tension and expectation surrounding Jesus’ suffering continue to build as Holy Week approaches. Several Jews approached the Pharisees today to tell them that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. This news was understandably concerning for the Pharisees, as this was a clear demonstration of Jesus’ power and authority. They were worried that if Jesus were to gain a following, it would threaten their power and authority. So, they decided to try to find a way to stop Jesus from gaining any more influence.
In fact, it appears that the Pharisees were more upset than amazed by this news. Jesus knew that the Pharisees plotted against him and stayed in Jerusalem’s shadows. There were many who followed him: some with faith, others seeking to destroy him. Despite knowing the danger, Jesus chose to stay in Jerusalem and continue his mission.
True discipleship calls us to bear witness and follow Jesus who was determined to spread his teachings of love without counting the cost.
This would mean even in the face of opposition, obstacles and trials. We need to pray and exhibit Jesus’ courage not to be swayed by opposition and criticism in accomplishing good works. You and I have two choices this week: we can either walk with Jesus or continue with our lives as if nothing has changed. It is possible that our courage will demand us to make certain sacrifices for the right reasons. Are we with Jesus? Will we courageously accompany him on his mission?
