Jesus does not overturn the law of Moses, nor does he set his followers free from the law, instead he tells his followers to go beyond the law by doing more than the law requires. Our life must not be confined to the four walls of doing the minimum, we are called to be the persons of maximum, and we can do so.
Gospel reading reveals that Jesus is the fulfilment of the law and in him the law of Moses is fully illuminated. Jesus didn’t condemn God’s laws but criticised the laws of Pharisees and Scribes. He put spirit and life to the words of the law, offered forgiveness, reconciliation and taught the people to live a righteous life with greater commitment. He went to the farthest point possible in fulfilling the law. He freed the people from the penalty of the law and made them the children of God.
Inspired by Jesus we must show the merciful love and lead people towards God. This demands us to move out of or comfort zone facing the challenges that come on our way. In this effort of fulfilling the will of Jesus we work together and grow together. Jesus who revealed the truth and fulfilled God’s laws calls us through various events and persons to do something new for the church and his people. So, let us ask God to give us the strength to accomplish what he has called us to do.
