Advent is a Time of Waiting, Anticipation, Expectation

Readings: Is 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Mk 13:33-37

In the first reading, we hear people’s prayer, in their pleading and longing for the return of Yahweh to them. “Why do you let us wander, O Lord, from your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear you not? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your heritage” (Is 63: 17-19a). The people are waiting.

In the second reading, we hear a thankful, hopeful, encouraging and affirming voice. “I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor 1:3-9). In the gospel, we hear, “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come” (Mk 13:33). So, in all the three readings, we have a common focus, that is of “waiting”.

Advent is a time of waiting, anticipation, expectation, joy, and preparation for the coming of Jesus, the promised Messiah. So, we are called to reflect on our own lives and prepare ourselves to welcome him by opening ourselves to his love, letting go of our pride, anger, and fear, and embracing humility, compassion, and forgiveness. The coming of Jesus is all about making us holy and acceptable to the Father by transforming us into his likeness.
