Archbishop Menamparampil Urges Study of ‘Civil Disobedience’ Amidst Assam’s Controversial Legislation

Verghese V Joseph –

Guwahati: In a climate of apprehension within Assam’s Christian community, Archbishop Emeritus Thomas Menamparampil of Guwahati has voiced concern over recent legislative moves by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, particularly targeting what is termed as “magic healing” and perceived as an attack on evangelism.

The passage of a bill in the Assembly, ostensibly aimed at curbing practices associated with faith healing, has sparked anxiety among Christians in Assam. The bill’s broad scope extends to encompass any form of prayer or spiritual gesture under the umbrella of banned healing activities, with Sarma candidly acknowledging its focus on evangelism.

Promptly responding to these developments, protests have erupted across the state, with the Assemblies of Nagaland and Meghalaya expressing solidarity and heightened vigilance over potential threats to Christian institutions in Assam.

Notably, Archbishop Menamparampil has emerged as a prominent voice in opposition to the legislation. Asserting the centrality of healing within Christian faith and mission, he argues against any infringement on citizens’ rights to seek medical or spiritual assistance, as well as their freedom to practice their religious beliefs without interference.

Critics point to Sarma’s track record, citing previous controversial actions such as his stance on “cow protection” and involvement in “encounter” killings, which have exacerbated tensions along state borders and raised concerns about minority rights.

In light of these developments, Archbishop Menamparampil invokes Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of Civil Disobedience, suggesting a reevaluation of its relevance in the current context. As the specter of uncertainty looms large, the Archbishop emphasises the need for strategic responses aligned with deeply held convictions.

Looking ahead, Archbishop Menamparampil underscores the enduring message of hope amidst adversity, drawing from Psalms 42:11 (“Why are you cast down, my soul? What groan within me? Hope in God, trust him still. My Saviour and My God”) to encourage resilience and trust in the face of challenges.

With Assam’s Christian community bracing for potential repercussions, Archbishop Menamparampil’s call for reflection and action resonates amidst a landscape marked by uncertainty and the need for steadfast resolve.

  1. Good idea. How do they intend to undertake civil disobedience? Will they have jail bharo, fast unto death or non payment of taxes? All easier said than done.

  2. I full support the views of chhotebhai. Why will the Laity always be the canon fodder for lathicharge, bayonets and bullets?
