During his public ministry, Jesus had the competence to understand and meet the needs of the people. He showed compassion to those who came to Him and had the courage to stand up against injustice and challenge those in authority. In one of his sermons, Pope Francis said that Jesus’ words in the Gospel reflect the sorrow of God, who continues to weep for a world trapped in violence, injustice, and war.
Even today, Jesus weeps because of human cruelty, selfishness, and the exploitation of the poor through words and actions. In today’s world, continuing Christ’s mission and being a prophetic voice is challenging, just as Jesus saw and responded to people’s needs and dared to confront those in authority who devalued human dignity.
To resist evil and the temptations of the devil, St. Paul encourages us to be strong in the Lord and put on the armour of God. Persecution in life is unavoidable; in one way or another, we will face trials. However, these sufferings are not the end but a preparation for greater glory.
Today, let us ask the Lord to fill us with his Spirit so that we may be able to recognize the needs of others and respond to them with compassion. May we also have the courage to stand up against those in authority who exploit the poor and marginalized.
