Ask the Lord to Forgive Us

Readings: 2 Thes 2: 1-3a, 14-17; Mt 23: 23-26

The readings invite us to examine ourselves and our outlook on the world. Often, we judge others, expecting them to be truthful, just, and kind, while justifying our own behaviour for convenience. This is why Jesus uses harsh words toward the scribes and Pharisees. We need to first purify our own conscience before trying to purify others.

Otherwise, we not only spoil others’ happiness but also our own. God loves us all and wants us to be happy and just. He desires that we be justified by our works and words, not by finding fault with others. Even when God judges the world, He will do so with justice, as he said, “I am the Lord, who tests the mind and heart; I give each man what his conduct deserves.”

Therefore, now is the time to stop practicing hypocrisy and being blind guides. If we can do this, we can truly start loving others instead of judging them. St. Thérèse of Lisieux said, “It is not enough to love; we must prove our love.” St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, exemplified this teaching in her own life.

Despite the wayward paths of her husband and son, she focused on her own faithfulness and prayer, believing in their eventual conversion. Her unwavering love and prayer for her son, Augustine ultimately led to his conversion and sainthood. Let us ask the Lord to forgive us for finding fault with others and to help us love others as he loves us.
