Every December 10th is International Human Rights Day. The day was observed in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The purpose of the declaration of Human Rights was to establish a common standard of living for everyone among the UN member states.
The North-East Solidarity Group (a network of civil society associations across North-East India), Assam Christian Forum (ACF) and Axon Nagorik Samaj (ANS) jointly organised a candle-light vigil at Guwahati on December 10.
The programme was organised to highlight the human rights activists such as Fr. Stan Swamy, Sudha Bhardwaj, Vernon Ferreira among others who are being unjustly punished for crimes they have not committed. The vigil urged for the release of these arrested and justice be done to the dalits, tribals and women for whose cause these intellectuals and activists have dedicated their lives.
The participants of the vigil also expressed their solidarity with the farmers too who are protesting for their rights in the most inhumane conditions and inclement weather.
The theme of Human Rights Day – 2020, ‘Recover Better—Stand Up for Human Rights’ conveyed the message of “the need to involve the people and communities to motivate them for action. The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights to which everyone is entitled as humans regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language birth or other status.
