The gospel message of today could be “called to be a simple disciple of Christ”. We have witnessed Christ’s birth and now we hear of John the Baptist who is chosen by God to prepare the way for Christ. His simplicity and humility in accepting to be the servant of Christ was well-known in the whole of Jerusalem. He was courageous to confront Jewish leaders and teachers of the law and say that he was preparing a platform for Christ.
Like John the Baptist we too are called to show the way of Christ. Each Christian by baptism is called to proclaim Christ. Most often we tend to take credit for ourselves in healings and the good things that happen through us. The God who works through us becomes secondary or forgotten in our ministry. This particular gospel is a reminder for us to come down from our selfcenteredness and become more God-centered. Let us all strive to convince the faithful that we all are his servants and are called to prepare a prominent place for him in each of human hearts and thus become a faithful servant of Christ.
