I wonder how these apostles left their family, their fishing nets and boats on the shore and followed Jesus hearing only two words- ‘Follow Me’. I am sure that practically these fishermen had heard about Jesus because he was known in the locality. These fishermen later followed Jesus when he was in the flesh and turned into the foundations of the Church. Today, the universal church celebrates the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle.
The challenge for me today is- How can I follow Jesus knowing that he is no longer with me in the flesh? Jesus invites me to acknowledge the presence and power of God’s kingdom. He invites me to reflect and live in a way that is present to today’s situation. What is essential here is that the call that I have received from him is personal- ‘Come, follow me’. Of course it is a call to a better way of living by growing in my love for Jesus and for all who live with me in my community.
It is also a call to be with Jesus to share life with him. In the context of my life Jesus invites me to feel his presence through personal prayer, scripture reading and worship. It is also an invitation for service. When I reach out to others with the love of Jesus whether at church or work or on the game field or in the place of my ministry, I experience his fellowship. Jesus invites me to become aware that my brothers and sisters are his tangible presence in my life.
