‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’ This question and answer prompt deep reflection on today’s gospel reading.
Jesus showed what to expect from the Messiah. It is not only by dying on the cross and rising again that he reveals his role as the Messiah but also through acts like multiplying five loaves and two fish to feed many people. The compassionate heart of Jesus towards people reminds us of the need to care for the needy. Jesus says, ‘Whatsoever you do to the least of these people you do it to me.’
Saint Teresa of Calcutta said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” In life, there are many times when people ask for help, yet the response may lack generosity, concern, time, and interest.
Jesus had concern for people, gave his time, and showed interest by feeding more than five thousand people. Today’s gospel reading invites us to be generous in giving and compassionate towards others, to be gentle in dealing with people, and humble in attending to their needs.
