Readings: Act 6: 8-10, 7:54-59; Mt 10: 17-22
Today, the church celebrates the feast of St. Stephen who died at the age of 36 as a deacon in Jerusalem and the first martyr. He was taken out of the city and stoned to death. His final words were a prayer of forgiveness for his attackers. During his death Jesus strengthened him to give witness of forgiveness and love.
Through St. Stephen’s fidelity and courage Jesus demonstrates to his disciples the difficulties and challenges that they will face on account of radical discipleship. The radical discipleship involves lots of turmoil and tribulations which are very hard to bear and tiring to endure.
After the celebration of Christmas Jesus is inviting us to share the good news by carrying our own crosses to find joy in suffering. Following Jesus is a golden opportunity as we receive a call to walk with him. Jesus will give us the grace and strength that we need to endure the pains and tribulations. May we pray for each other that we will have the love, courage and strength to follow Jesus, especially when facing challenges.
