Readings: Amos 6: 1a, 4-7; 1 Tim 6: 11-16; Lk 16: 19-31
The readings of today impel me to be compassionate and cater to the needs of those I meet in my life. The readings give me a message not to be indifferent. The first reading is a warning of God through Prophet Amos to those who only enjoy life and have no regard for social justice. They only live a life of selfishness thinking only about their food, drink, and comfort. They will be punished by the Lord for their loose living.
In the second reading, St. Paul encourages Timothy to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness to possess eternal life. He is strengthened by St. Paul to uphold his faith and testimony.
The Gospel reading presents to us the story of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man was indifferent to the situation of Lazarus. He had no regard for Lazarus or any social justice. For him, Lazarus did not exist in his life. The rich man had things in abundance but did not have a heart of compassion and generosity. The story tells that he was taken to a place of no return to the presence of God.
Today I am encouraged to be compassionate. The condition of Lazarus makes me feel one with him, but the selfishness of the rich man warns me to stay away from the attitude of indifference. I am strengthened to fight the good fight of Faith.
