Be Strong in Your Decision to Worship the True God

Readings: Dan 3:14-20; Jn 8:31-42

Today’s readings invite us to believe in God and his commandments in times our trials and tribulations on this earthly journey. The first reading from the Book of the Prophet Daniel recounts King Nebuchadnezzar’s decree to worship a massive golden statue, a test of loyalty.

Many Jews complied, fearing persecution, but three young men, favourites in the royal court, refused due to their faith in Yahweh. Despite being cast into a furnace, their steadfast faith saved them, as Yahweh sent an angel for protection. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego inspire us to remain faithful amid opposition or persecution. In the gospel reading Jesus challenges his disciples to embrace a similar commitment to truth and obedience. He declares, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free”.

Jesus emphasizes the transformative power of truth and the necessity of remaining faithful to his teachings. However, the response of the Jews reveals a reluctance to accept Jesus’ message fully. The Jews were proud of their origin as children of Abraham. They had a special claim over others.

Similarly, at times, we may pride ourselves on being Christians, believing that mere baptism ensures salvation. Jesus clarifies that being Christian doesn’t guarantee entry into the kingdom of heaven; rather, one must fully accept Jesus and live according to his teachings in everyday life. Let us imitate the lives of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who remained strong in their decision to worship the true God to enter the kingdom of God.
