What does Jesus want to say to us when he says, ‘You are the salt of the earth’? All of us need salt in our everyday food because salt adds taste and at the same time it preserves the food from getting spoiled. We can ask ourselves, does my life have that salt so that the people could get the taste when they are in despair, unloved, etc.
What does Jesus want to tell us, when he says, ‘You are light of the world’? Light is essential in many ways not only to humans but also to animals and plants. Light dispels darkness. Do we have that light in our life? If we do not have light, our life will be miserable and full of struggles.
As Christians, many people expect us to live like the salt and light of Christ in the world. Let us ask ourselves, “do I truly consider myself to be the salt and light of Christ to others?” If yes, how are our words, actions and lifestyle? Human as we are, we fall again and again, yet taking the resolution to change our lives to be the salt and light to the world and to become true Christians for the world.
What is our duty as Christians who believe in the risen Lord? We must have HOPE to stand again and again to start a new life. Our world is plunged into tremendous amount of tastelessness and darkness resulting in killings, corruption, loneliness and unhappiness. There is a cry in this beautiful world for a channel of salt and light to restore this world which has torn apart. Like Jesus our Master, each one of us is called to give without expecting anything in return in giving the salt and light to all.
