When Jesus sent out the twelve in the middle of his public ministry, his instructions were very clear. They were instructed to do all the good they can do, carry the good news of peace to people, with little dependence on their possessions, and with as little detachment to acceptance/recognition as possible.
This was like a trial period for the twelve. The good news that they carried was to be the closeness of the kingdom of God. The healings and the message of peace were signs of this good news.
When I carry in myself the good news of Christ, I will become a source of life to the dead, wholeness to the broken and a challenge to the evil spirit. When I become a sign of the closeness of kingdom of God to people, I will be a carrier of peace regardless of the welcome or gratitude I get.
Until then, Jesus continues to invite me to shed the gold and silver that I hold on to, the extra conveniences that I grow used to, and even the walking sticks that I consider essential for my ministry.
