Readings: 2 Kgs 2: 1, 6 – 14; Mt 6: 1 – 6, 16 – 18
The readings of the day invite us to grow in love for our neighbours through our actions. In the gospel, Jesus warns us not to do good deeds simply for the approval of others. He wants us to be aware of our motivations and to do what is right out of a genuine desire to help, love, and make the world a better place. Jesus is primarily concerned with our motivations, expecting that our actions and decisions flow from the love of God, the gospel, and for people and the world.
Unconditional love is what truly matters. How often do we stop and examine our motivations? Are we concerned about others or too preoccupied to notice the people around us? I believe that most people in the world want to be good and care for others. Today, God gives us another opportunity to purify our motives so we can act with pure intentions.
In the spirit of Saint Romuald, Abbot, who taught, “Empty yourself completely and sit waiting, content with the grace of God, like a chick who tastes nothing and eats nothing but what its mother brings it,” let us strive for purity of heart. Let us pray to the Lord that He may grant us the grace to grow in love and action, becoming channels of his love here on earth.
