The gospel reading presents to us how Jesus recognizes the importance of rest for his disciples. After a period of intense ministry, Jesus makes them step away from the crowds and find refreshment. He invites them to come away to a deserted place and rest for a while.
This teaches us that even those doing God’s work need time to recharge, reflect, and renew their strength. At times, we too must withdraw ourselves to a quiet place. For us, it could be a time of prayer, meditation, and reflection, or simply keeping ourselves away from distractions and technology to connect with our inner selves and our spiritual resources, that is, God. Yes, we need rest, yet we should not forget our mission.
Even though Jesus’ own need for rest is interrupted by the arrival of a large crowd, his heart is moved with compassion for them. He sees them as sheep without a shepherd, lost and vulnerable.
This teaches us about the importance of cultivating a compassionate heart, one that is sensitive to the needs of others, especially those who are lost and struggling. Indeed, when we take care of ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually, we are better equipped to serve others. A weak and tired individual has less to offer. By prioritizing our own well-being, we ultimately become more effective and compassionate contributors to the world around us.
