Love your God and love your neighbour are the greatest commandments of all. Such love is worth more than any brunt offering or sacrifice. Is there anything in life more important than the call to love? I think the answer is a big NO. Jesus in today’s gospel points out this truth very clearly. We have heard many times the word LOVE.
In fact, all teachings and commandments of Jesus revolve around this word. For us Christians, love is the heart and foundation of our life, and we are called to be in love and spread love. Now the question is what are we doing and how are we practicing it? To what extent we are loving in words and actions in our day-to-day life? It is true that most of us do only speaking about love because a life of love costs, demands, and challenges us.
Jesus says, “love your enemies” but today we find it very difficult to love the people with whom we live under the same roof, then how is it possible to love those who hurt us? Nevertheless, Jesus gives us an open invitation to practice love at any costs beginning with people around us, for loving God, and loving others is the most important thing we can do as imitators of Christ.
Jesus gives us ample opportunities every day to practice love. Let us make use of those moments and become the faces of love. Saint John of the cross once said, “at the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love”.
