Bengaluru: The All-Karnataka United Forum for Christian Human Rights (AKUFCHR) on Saturday undertook a peace rally in Bengaluru to express solidarity with people of Manipur who have been victims of targeted violence and threats.
In a press release, AKUFCHR said that it was deeply concerned about the ongoing situation in the state of Manipur, which has been marred by an ethnic clash since May 3, 2023. The violence has resulted in a devastating loss of over 200 lives, with more than 300 injured and approximately 60,000 displaced. As of July 3, there have been approximately 5,053 reported cases of arson and an estimated 54,488 displaced individuals, exacerbating the situation’s gravity.
The release further stated that the disturbing reports of targeted violence, vandalism of churches, and threats against Christians have instilled fear and anguish among the community. In response, the Christian Community has united in large numbers to express and demonstrate our solidarity with the suffering humanity.
The Peace Rally organized by the United Christian Forum (UCF) under the banner of AKUFCHR aimed to emphasize the importance of rebuilding trust and confidence among the affected population. The release sought immediate action to disarm vigilantes and anti-social elements, to prevent them from taking the law into their own hands. Additionally, the restoration of damaged houses, public properties, and the numerous desecrated and vandalized churches was crucial for reinstating a sense of security and normalcy, the note added.
The release affirmed that the Christian community, which is an integral part of Manipur’s diverse tapestry, firmly believed in the principles of love, compassion, and harmony. Their faith guides them to promote peace and understanding among all communities.
“The ongoing violence has created widespread fear and insecurity among the people of Manipur, forcing many to abandon their homes and seek refuge in relief camps. Despite the deployment of security forces to the affected areas, the violence persists. It is clear that peace is an essential prerequisite for the progress and development of the beautiful north eastern region. Only through peace can society thrive and move forward together,” the note observed.
AKUFCHR, through the United Christian Forum (UCF), organized this peace rally to stand in solidarity with the suffering brethren of Manipur. “We urge all stakeholders, including the government, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders, to prioritize peacebuilding efforts, ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents,” the release said.
