Readings: Sir 35: 1-12; Mk 10: 28-31
The first reading of today reminds us to be cheerful in whatever work we do. The deeds of a cheerful one please God, and he becomes righteous before the Lord. The offering and sacrifice done by the cheerful ones are accepted by God. But the wicked he disowns.
In the Gospel reading of today St. Peter, who is a dedicated disciple of Jesus, says, ‘we have left everything and followed you.’ A disciple who is loved, faithful and enthusiastic in responding to Jesus’ questions is now looking for his personal safety. He followed Jesus with great enthusiasm but today he has lost that cheerfulness and expects a happy life which can only be granted by Jesus. Knowing it, Jesus said, ‘first will be last and the last will be first.’
He further warns all the Christians to be prepared for any kind of persecution before expecting a place in the heavenly kingdom. Persecution is the gateway to heaven. Indeed, Christ himself was persecuted, tortured, mocked, and put to death, but God raised him to a high place. Disciples thought that leaving everybody in family and following Jesus is a blessing and will guarantee the
best place in heaven, but Jesus shocked his disciples by telling them to be prepared for persecution in his name.
In moments of persecution Jesus Christ challenges us to check our faith in God. By going through suffering, we grow in God. When we grow in God, we will not stand empty-handed before the Lord.
