Call to be Servant Leaders

By Thomas T, IVD

Readings: 1 Thess 1: 1-5, 8b -10; Mt 23: 13 -22

We are called to practice ‘Servant Leadership ‘without any expectation and reward. We are striving to become selfless in our actions as Christ was, without fame and name. St. Paul in his letter to Thessalonians speaks about the work of faith, labour of love and steadfastness of hope in Lord Jesus Christ.

St. Paul clearly emphasizes that they are really chosen by God to turn from idols, to serve a living God who is eternal truth. After receiving baptism of the Holy Spirit, there was tremendous change in their life. They all experienced new life and continue to live in faith, love and hope. In today’s Gospel, Jesus denounces Pharisees and Scribes. Though they were specially chosen by Lord, they forgot their virtues and religiousness. Their love has no fear of God.

By these readings Jesus clearly instructs us that no one should fall into attraction of worldly pleasure. We must remember our baptismal promises guided by the Spirit, renounce the evil and cling to holiness. The same spirit must continue to the end of our life. Our mind must forgo position, possession, appreciation, high honour, money and wealth to live a life of serenity and sanctity. Then we become leaders, acquiring the values of humility, self sacrifice, perseverance and piety to serve the needy and marginalized.
