Old Goa: Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, delivered a powerful homily on December 3, emphasizing that “St. Francis Xavier is an inspiration and model to be a messenger of the Good News.” This message was shared during a Eucharistic celebration at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, coinciding with the ongoing exposition of the saint’s relics.
The theme of the homily, “We are messengers of the Good News,” resonated deeply with the gathered congregation, which included numerous bishops, priests, and thousands of pilgrims from across India and beyond. Cardinal Tagle highlighted how St. Francis Xavier, initially skeptical about Ignatius of Loyola’s vision, became one of his first companions and co-founders of the Society of Jesus after discerning God’s calling. His journey from doubt to dedication exemplifies the transformative power of faith.
“St. Francis was tasked to provide pastoral care mainly to the Catholics in Goa, then in Malacca and Maluku Island,” Cardinal Tagle noted, reflecting on Xavier’s missionary zeal. “He proclaimed the Gospel with unwavering commitment amidst numerous challenges.” The Cardinal recounted how Xavier ventured to Japan with hopes of entering China but ultimately passed away on Shangchuan Island. His travels were characterized not by ambition but by a profound love for Jesus, which fueled his mission.
Cardinal Tagle called upon the faithful to embody humility and authenticity as they spread God’s word. “Authentic messengers do not seek recognition or create their own messages,” he asserted. Instead, they embrace a simple lifestyle and face adversity with meekness, relying on God’s goodness and strength. He warned against false messengers who bring division and disaster, contrasting them sharply with those who genuinely represent Christ’s message of love.
“The Good News is that God offers His Kingdom through Jesus and in the Holy Spirit,” he explained. This message calls for unity among all people, breaking down barriers that separate humanity. Cardinal Tagle quoted St. Paul, emphasizing that this revelation is meant for everyone: “Those who allow Jesus to rule their hearts will regard each other not as strangers or enemies but as brothers and sisters.”
The celebration was marked by a spirit of community and reverence as dignitaries including Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli and various bishops from around the world participated in honoring St. Francis Xavier’s legacy. Thousands of pilgrims traveled from regions such as Pune, Kolhapur, and Belgaum to partake in this significant event, which is part of a decennial exposition expected to attract millions until January 5, 2025.
As Cardinal Tagle concluded his homily, he urged everyone to reflect on their roles as messengers of God’s love and compassion in today’s world. The gathering served as a powerful reminder of St. Francis Xavier’s enduring influence as a missionary and the continued relevance of his message in fostering peace and unity among all people.
This year’s exposition not only commemorates St. Francis Xavier’s life but also invites believers to renew their commitment to spreading the Good News with authenticity and love—a call that echoes through centuries since his missionary journeys began.
