Verghese V Joseph –

New Delhi: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) delegation, led by Most Rev. Andrews Thazhath, CBCI President, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and raised several concerns regarding the Christian community in India. The meeting was cordial.

The delegation also included Most Rev. Joseph Mar Thomas, Vice-President of CBCI, Most Rev. Anil Couto, Secretary General of CBCI, and Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy Secretary General of CBCI.

During the interaction, following issues were raised:

Increasing Attacks on Christians and Misuse of Anti-Conversion Laws

The delegation expressed concerns about the increasing attacks against Christians under false allegations of forced conversions and the misuse of anti-conversion laws. They appealed to the Prime Minister to intervene and stop the atrocities on minorities and harassment of Christians.
They also discussed issues regarding reservations for Dalits and tribals, and the violence in Manipur.

Reservations for Dalit and Tribal Christians

The CBCI President sought reservation benefits for Dalit Christians, as they often face discrimination and exclusion. They appealed to him to extend reservation benefits to Dalit Christians, similar to those enjoyed by Dalits in other religious groups. They also requested him to preserve and not withdraw the reservations provided to tribal Christians.

Representation in National Commissions and Ministries.

The delegation highlighted the absence of Christian representation in the national commissions for minorities and minority educational institutions for several years. They requested the Prime Minister to consider appointing qualified Christians to various ministries and departments of the government.

Challenges Faced by Christian NGOs

The CBCI leaders informed the Prime Minister that many Christian-run NGOs are facing undue challenges during the renewal of their FCRA registration, despite their deep involvement in the social uplift of the society.

Contributions of the Christian Community

The delegation highlighted the significant contributions of the Christian community to nation-building since the first century of the Christian era, particularly in the fields of education, healthcare, and social upliftment. Christian institutions have been at the forefront, providing quality education and medical care to millions, especially in rural and far-flung areas.

Invitation to Pope Francis

The CBCI leaders appealed to the Prime Minister to accelerate the process of inviting Pope Francis to visit India.

The CBCI office bearers congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on assuming office for the third consecutive term and assured him of their support in nation-building efforts. A letter detailing these points was presented to the Prime Minister.

  1. Why no lay leaders in the delegation? Could the venerable bishops also tell us what was the PM’s response?

  2. The reason for not taking lay leaders on board is the prelates want a private discussion with the PM to save their skins and properties first. The laity can always be a collateral casualty.
