Today, as we celebrate St. Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, we remember his initial doubt when he heard that Jesus was from Nazareth. His scepticism was based on the belief that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem, not Nazareth. This initial doubt was natural, given the expectations of his time.
However, Philip’s response to Nathanael was simple and profound: “Come and see.” Nathanael’s story teaches us an important lesson about faith. Often, we may doubt or struggle with aspects of our faith because we don’t fully understand them. Like Nathanael, we might be quick to question when things don’t immediately make sense.
But the key is not to close ourselves off from the truth just because we are uncertain. Philip’s invitation, “Come and see,” encourages us to bring our uncertainties to Jesus. Faith often comes not through logic but through a personal encounter with him. Like Nathanael, let us approach Jesus with openness, trusting that he will reveal the truth and deepen our faith.
