Readings: 1 Cor 1:26-31; Mt 25:14-30
In today’s first reading, St. Paul speaks about our call to the Christian life. He says that we were not chosen because we were great and strong but out of God’s love he has chosen us.
The gospel of the day presents the parable of the talents. This parable is simple and easy to understand but its lessons are hard to follow in our life. It instructs how to live in this world with responsibility and dutifulness.
Therefore, it creates a platform to learn Christian values. In this world, all things belong to God who created it all. We are only stewards or custodians. We are here to care for and look after the things and people around us with love and concern.
Therefore, the fact is that we are judged according to the way we manage our master’s resources. Another aspect that we find in this parable is the usage of the word ‘talent’. Normally we compare talents with some natural abilities. It is very normal in our jobs, that if we do well in a given responsibility, we are raised higher in our position and if not, we are demoted.
It is the same to our talents and abilities, if we do not discover and develop, they will be taken away from us, like a machine that is not used. If we discover and develop our talents and abilities, we will master those talents and be blessed with new abilities. Therefore, let us pray for the grace and blessing from God to discover and develop our talents and abilities. And let us be
honest stewards or custodians of the world entrusted to us.
