Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Guardian Angels. This day recognizes the protective roles that guardian angels play in our lives. Who are these angels? They are God’s messengers of love, sent from the kingdom of peace above, to watch over us, soothe our sorrows, calm our fears, and inspire us to serve God with willing hearts.
In the gospel of the day Jesus refers to children’s guardian angels: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I say to you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church confirms this, stating, “From infancy to death, human life is surrounded by [angels] watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd, leading him to life” (CCC 336). The role of guardian angels is to guide us toward good thoughts, actions, and words while preserving us from evil.
The Feast of the Guardian Angels also serves as an opportunity for us to embrace our duty and responsibility to become guardians, friends, and guides to one another. Many among us struggle with difficulties such as faith issues, financial challenges, mental health problems, and emotional breakdowns. This Feast is a reminder for each of us to become guardians for one another, encouraging, promoting, and strengthening one another in our journeys of faith.
