Dr. A. Magimai Pragasam –
Trichirappalli: A dynamic two-day workshop titled ‘Storytelling in the Digital Age’ was recently conducted on April 12-13, 2024, at the Kaviri Communications Centre in Trichirappalli, Tamil Nadu. Organized by Madha Television, the workshop aimed to cultivate a socially responsible and dedicated group of young media enthusiasts equipped for the challenges of the digital era.
The workshop catered to 45 young participants and delved into various aspects of content creation, storytelling techniques, short film production, cyber activism, and pastoral reflections on social media engagement. Throughout the two days, engaging discussions, collaborative group activities, and the creation of impactful short videos on social issues took center stage.
The culminating moment of the workshop was the screening of the short films created by the participants, graced by the presence of Most Rev. Dr. Arockiaraj, the Bishop of Tiruchirapalli. Commending the creativity and dedication of the young filmmakers, he highlighted the significance of promoting human values and sharing the message of Jesus through their work.
Rev. Dr. Innocent, a prominent speaker at the event, emphasized the importance of cyber activism in utilizing the internet constructively for community building and raising awareness on social issues. He urged the participants to leverage social media as a tool for advocating human rights, mobilizing communities, and fostering responsible citizenship.
Another key highlight of the workshop was the insightful session led by Rev. Dr. Jenith Sekar, the Technical Manager of Madha TV. Drawing from the Vatican document ‘Towards Full Presence – A Pastoral Reflection on Engagement with Social Media,’ he encouraged the young minds to view social media as a space for fostering community, shared values, and empathy. He emphasized the role of individuals in choosing to be proactive ‘Good Samaritans’ rather than passive bystanders in the digital realm.
Dr. Jenith’s discussion encompassed four essential themes: navigating the risks of the digital landscape, embodying compassion and neighborly care, spreading positivity and the Good News online, and adopting a Christ-like approach in the digital age.
The workshop’s resource team, comprising esteemed individuals such as Fr. David Arockiyam, Mr. Rabi Bernard, Ms. Anu, and several others, played a pivotal role in guiding and inspiring the participants. The Director of Kaviri Communication Centre, Fr. Deepan, ensured a conducive learning environment, fostering a memorable and enriching experience for all involved.
The ‘Storytelling in the Digital Age’ workshop not only equipped young individuals with valuable skills and insights but also instilled a sense of social responsibility and ethical engagement in the digital realm. It served as a platform for nurturing creativity, empathy, and a proactive approach towards utilizing social media for positive change and community building.
