Readings: Ex 20:1-17; 1 Cor 1:22-25; Jn 2:13-25
In the first reading, we are reminded that God has been good to Moses and the people of Israel. Additionally, we listen to the recital of the Ten Commandments. These commandments, along with other laws, serve as various ways to express our love and maintain a relationship with God.
In today’s Gospel reading from John, Jesus purifies the holy place of God’s presence. This cleansing of the Temple by Jesus symbolizes what Lent can be for all of us. We are God’s holy Temple, and his Holy Spirit dwells within us. However, we often find ourselves surrounded and influenced by the distractions of the world, causing us to lose focus and be attracted to inappropriate things and enticements.
To avoid losing focus and to cleanse ourselves from within, we must surrender ourselves to Jesus, allowing him to touch us and make us holy. To remain in this holiness, we can draw from the guidance of the Ten Commandments, as well as the instructions we receive from our elders.
Therefore, through these readings, we are all invited during Lent to get engaged in practices like fasting, prayer, and works of charity. By doing so, we can become holy and manifest God in our daily lives.
