Readings: Gen 3: 9-15; Jn 19: 25-34
We honour Mary, as Mother of the Church on the day after Pentecost reminding us that Mary was present with the disciples on Pentecost. Mary prayed with the first Christian community, awaiting the gift of the Holy Spirit for all believers. Mary prayed with them as the Holy Spirit descended. And Mary, our mother, continues to pray for us.
In the first reading, we encounter the story of Adam and Eve’s fall—a significant moment when sin entered the world. Amidst this darkness, God offers hope. He prophesies the birth of a new woman—one destined to give birth to the Savior. This woman, Mary becomes the vessel through which God’s plan of redemption unfolds. Her courageous “yes” to God’s invitation marks the dawn of a new era—a reversal of the original sin.
In the gospel passage we see Mary standing at the foot of the cross. She gazes upon her son’s agony and sacrifice. In his final moments, Jesus entrusts her care to his beloved disciple, John. But Mary’s role extends beyond blood ties; she becomes the mother of all disciples—the Church itself. Her maternal love embraces us all. She intercedes for us, guiding our journey toward salvation. As the Mother of our Redeemer and all believers, she stands alongside Christ the King. As we honour Mary, the Mother of the Church, let us seek her guidance, imitate her virtues, and entrust ourselves to her maternal care. Through Mary, we find our way to Jesus, the author of life and our eternal hope.
