Readings: Deut 6:2-6; Heb 7:23-28; Mk 12:28b-34
On this 31st Sunday in ordinary time, the readings emphasize the nature of a loving God, which is foundational to our faith.
The first reading urges us to love God with our entire being and to follow his commandments. When we prioritize our love for God, everything else falls into place. The second reading highlights that former priests, limited by death, could not continue their service. In contrast, Jesus is a priest forever, having made the ultimate sacrifice once for all. He guides us eternally.
In the gospel, when asked about the greatest commandments, Jesus replies that we must love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength—this is our first and most important duty. He further emphasizes the second commandment: to love our neighbour as ourselves. But who is our neighbour? It is everyone, as all are made in the image and likeness of God.
Pope Francis reminds us, “Love is the only force that can bring true joy.” If we embody this love for God and for one another, we will naturally uphold all commandments. We don’t steal, cheat, or harm those we love. By living out this love, we can experience a glimpse of heaven here on earth.
