Many people search for meaning in life and for many God is too far away and unreachable. The story of the Samaritan woman in today’s gospel is full of truth and has a powerful lesson to learn.
The spiritual search and truth of the Samaritan woman was met today as she encountered Jesus. Jesus recognizes the genuineness of this woman, who became a messenger of the
Messiah to her community, drawing others to meet Jesus.
Yes, our God comes to meet us, even if we are far away from him; and at times he waits eagerly for us to come to Him in repentance. He gives himself to us even if we think that we don’t need him and self-contented. He initiates conversion through his intimate encounter with us. We encounter God in our life through various people and events.
God converses with us through them, and we only need to listen to his voice with an open heart. But most of the time we don’t listen. Sometimes even if we listen, we fail to understand, and that is where we miss the point. So, today the lesion that Jesus wants us to learn through the Samaritan woman is that to listen to him and to understand his messianic role and to bring forth conversion. He asks us to experience his new life in abundance and to share it with others joyfully.
