As a human being I often tend to look for signs to believe. But Jesus invites me to believe in him to see greater things that my human eyes cannot see. Jesus wants me to believe in him and open my spiritual eyes to see him and recognize him.
In the Gospel reading of the day, we see the Pharisees and Scribes, who were the religious leaders, asking for signs and miracles from Jesus. They asked signs from Jesus to test and trap him, because he was a threat for them as he challenged them in their external practices.
Jesus’ life itself was a miracle, and throughout his ministry he performed many miracles and taught people with authority. Jesus condemned their prejudices and faithless attitudes and saw them as an evil and adulterous generation.
At times I too have the attitude of the Pharisees and Scribes and expect miracles to happen in my life without having sufficient faith.
However, Jesus, who is merciful and forgiving, strengthens my faith and confirms that he is truly the Messiah. He gives me an opportunity to repent like the people of Nineveh, to be humble like queen of Sheba, to recognize him as my savior, and to experience his unconditional love and forgiveness in my daily life.
