Faith Isn’t Just About Believing

Readings: Acts 25:13b-21; Jn 21:15-19

The Gospel reading of today offers an emotional glimpse into the relationship between Jesus and Peter. It’s a passage filled with tenderness, forgiveness, and a call to service. As I read it, a few things strike me.

Firstly, there’s the depth of Jesus’ love. Three times, he asks Peter, ‘Do you love me?’ The repetition stings a bit, like a reminder of Peter’s denial. Yet, Jesus is not condemning; he offers Peter a chance to reaffirm his devotion. It speaks to a love that endures shortcomings, a love that seeks a response.

Secondly, Peter’s response is touching. Initially confident, his answers turn vulnerable by the third question. ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ It’s a reminder that true love isn’t about boasting but rather a quiet understanding—a deep affection that transcends words.

Thirdly, Jesus’ commission to Peter is striking. ‘Feed my lambs…Tend my sheep.’ He entrusts Peter with the care of his followers. It’s a metaphor for service, for nurturing and guiding others on their faith journey. This verse challenges me: Am I willing to serve others? Do I demonstrate love through my actions?

Finally, the foreshadowing of Peter’s death is both solemn and beautiful. Jesus tells him, ‘When you are old… someone else will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.’ This speaks of Peter’s future martyrdom but also of his unwavering commitment. He will follow Jesus, even to the point of death.

The gospel passage like a wake-up call, reminding us that faith isn’t just about believing; it’s about expressing love through our actions and using our talents to help others. Let’s pray for grace, humility, and the ability to show Christ’s love in what we say and do.
