From Legacy to Renewal: Cardinal Gracias Passes the Torch to Archbishop Rodrigues

Verghese V Joseph –

Pope Francis has officially accepted the resignation of Oswald Cardinal Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay, marking a significant transition in the leadership of one of India’s most prominent archdioceses. Cardinal Gracias, who turned 80 on December 24, 2024, had submitted his resignation five years prior, which was recently reaffirmed and approved by the Holy Father. This decision reflects both the cardinal’s long and dedicated service to the Church and the natural progression of leadership within the Archdiocese.

Oswald Cardinal Gracias has been a pivotal figure in the Catholic Church in India since his appointment as Archbishop of Bombay in 2006. His tenure has been characterised by a commitment to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and pastoral care. As a member of Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinals, he played a crucial role in advising the Pope on matters affecting the Church globally. Cardinal Gracias has often emphasized the importance of synodality—the idea that all members of the Church should participate in its decision-making processes—demonstrating his alignment with Pope Francis’ vision for a more inclusive Church.

Under his leadership, the Archdiocese of Bombay has seen significant growth in various ministries and outreach programs aimed at serving marginalized communities. His efforts to address social issues such as poverty, education, and healthcare have left an indelible mark on the local Church and society at large. Cardinal Gracias has also been instrumental in fostering ecumenical relationships with other faiths, promoting peace and understanding in a diverse cultural landscape.

Archbishop John Rodrigues

Following this, Bishop John Rodrigues, who was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Archdiocese of Bombay on November 30, now formally assumes office as the Archbishop of Bombay. His installation as Coadjutor Bishop took place during a Eucharistic celebration at the Cathedral on Thursday, January 23, 2025. As Coadjutor Bishop, Archbishop Rodrigues immediately succeeds Cardinal Gracias in leading the Archdiocese.

Bishop Rodrigues brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Having served as an auxiliary bishop for a decade and as rector of Mount Mary Basilica, he is familiar with the needs and aspirations of the faithful in Bombay. His pastoral approach emphasizes community engagement and spiritual growth, aligning closely with Cardinal Gracias’ legacy. In a video message released upon his resignation acceptance, Cardinal Gracias expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who supported him during his tenure. He acknowledged the dedication of bishops, priests, religious communities, and laypeople in their collective mission to serve God and their communities. “I have been blessed with grace and guidance as your shepherd,” he stated, reflecting on his time leading the Archdiocese.

The faithful in Bombay have responded positively to this transition, welcoming Archbishop Rodrigues with open arms. Many recognize his deep knowledge and commitment to service as vital assets for leading the Archdiocese forward. The clergy and laity alike have expressed their confidence in Rodrigues’ ability to continue building upon Cardinal Gracias’ legacy while also addressing contemporary challenges facing the Church. In remarks about his predecessor, Archbishop Rodrigues stated, “Cardinal Oswald Gracias was a giant of a man, and now as his successor I have mighty big shoes to fill.” This acknowledgment underscores both respect for Cardinal Gracias’ contributions and an understanding of the responsibilities that come with leading such a vibrant archdiocese.

To formally welcome Archbishop John Rodrigues into his new role, a special Eucharistic celebration is planned for February 11, 2025—the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. This event will serve as a unifying moment for priests, religious members, and lay representatives from across the Archdiocese. It is an opportunity for all to come together in prayerful support for their new leader as he embarks on this important mission. The Archdiocese assures Archbishop Rodrigues of its continued prayers and cooperation as he assumes this vital role. The spirit of unity and collaboration is essential for fostering growth within the community and responding effectively to both spiritual and social needs.

As Archbishop John Rodrigues takes on this new leadership role, he faces both challenges and opportunities. The Catholic Church in India is navigating complex issues such as secularism, religious pluralism, and social inequality. Under his guidance, there is hope that the Archdiocese will continue to be a beacon of hope and service in these turbulent times.  Rodrigues’ commitment to pastoral care will likely focus on enhancing existing programs while exploring new initiatives that address contemporary issues faced by parishioners. His emphasis on community involvement will be crucial in engaging younger generations who seek meaningful connections within their faith.

The acceptance of Cardinal Oswald Gracias’ resignation marks not only an end but also a new beginning for the Archdiocese of Bombay. As Bishop John Rodrigues steps into his role as Archbishop, there is optimism about continuing the legacy of service established by Cardinal Gracias while addressing new challenges with compassion and dedication. The transition reflects a broader narrative within the Catholic Church—a movement towards renewal through leadership that values collaboration, inclusivity, and active engagement with societal issues. As both clergy and laity unite under Archbishop Rodrigues’ leadership, there is hope for continued growth in faith and community service within one of India’s most dynamic archdioceses.
