Gentleness and Strength of Jesus

Readings: Is 11:1-10; Lk 10:21-24

The first reading speaks of the shoot that will come forth from the stump of Jesse, a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah. It describes the ideal ruler endowed with the spirit of the Lord; wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord. This ruler will bring justice, peace, and a harmonious kingdom where even natural enemies live in harmony.

In the gospel, we hear that Jesus rejoices in the Holy Spirit and praises the Father for revealing divine truths to the “little ones” rather than the wise and learned. He speaks of the special relationship between the Father and the Son and the unique revelation given to those who follow Him, and that the kingdom of God is accessible to those who approach with humility, openness, and simplicity of heart. Saint Augustine speaks of the transformative power of this relationship: “To fall in love with God is the greatest of all romances; to seek Him, the greatest adventure; to find Him, the greatest human achievement.”

Our journey of faith is all about an adventure of discovering God’s love and allowing it to transform our lives. So, both the readings of the day emphasize on humility and the divine plan unfolding in ways we cannot understand by our worldly wisdom. Today as we reflect on these readings, we are invited to embody the gentleness and strength of Jesus, sharing the good news with humility and love.
