We forgive so that we may be forgiven. How often do I need to forgive?
The one who truly forgives does not keep the count. If the forgiveness is measured, then it is not forgiveness. Forgiveness is not easy but it is not impossible. We may not forget the hurt we have experienced but we can choose to forgive. Today’s readings highlight the theme of forgiveness and the mercy of God. In the Gospel reading Jesus teaches us the significance of forgiving others as we are forgiven by God. We are like the debtor in the parable who owed thousand talents, for we sin every day. Very often we walk away from God. Therefore, Jesus today teaches us the boundless nature of God’s mercy and forgiveness.
The first reading speaks about the persecution faced by Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and their faithfulness to God in the times of hardships and sufferings for they believed in the mercy of God. Thus, today we are invited to trust in God’s mercy and the redemptive power of God. One way to experience and share the mercy of God is to extend forgiveness.
This is a challenge because it calls us to come out of our comfort zones and let go of our grudges and hurt feelings. When we can deepen our faith in God and share forgiveness, transformation takes place. For, faith in God’s mercy and forgiveness help us to rebuild the relationships and strengthen them for the glory of God.
