Readings: Rev 18: 1-2,21-23; 19 1-3,9a; Lk 21:20-28
Today’s reading from Revelation describes the fall of a once- thriving nation, the Roman Empire. John, speaking through an angel’s voice, describes all the people and things that will no longer exist in this fallen nation, which has become a haunt for demons and every unclean beast. The mighty angel declares, “Your merchants were the great ones of the world; all nations were led astray by your magic potion.” In verse four, a voice from heaven calls out, “Depart from her, my people, so you will not share in her sins or receive her plagues.” God remembers her crimes.
At the end of the reading, the angel proclaims, “Blessed are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” God desires us to be totally dependent on him. The destruction of great cities is imminent for those who follow sinful ways, making it harder to hear God’s voice after listening to the devil. But blessed are those who hear and respond to him.
God seeks our consent, not demands it. True submission to his will can help us avoid traps, including the temptation to judge others. The gospel reminds us of the end times when the Son of Man will return, and our redemption will be at hand (Lk 21:26-28). All God asks is our “yes” to his service, with repentant hearts.
