Today’s Gospel passage “The Sabbath” brings me before the people of God for the judgment of my life and behavior. Jesus lived a radical and exemplary life where his preaching and life were compatible with each other. And he wished Pharisees, the true followers of the Torah, to be like him. The scenario of Sabbath in the gospels depicts attitude of Pharisees who impose rules and laws on the poor.
Jesus does not react to the Pharisees who questioned about Sabbath but he appealed to them that they must practice the law genuinely. Jesus tells me too the same. We witness today some dominating the entire country where justice and peace have no place. A question arises in my mind, ‘what will I gain in following the laws?’ Then, I find myself perplexed at my faith journey and reality of life.
I am sure people observe every action done by rulers, lawmakers and church authorities. Striving to live a virtuous life, respecting people and obeying law are a challenge for me. However, God has given the inner strength to his followers, whom he has chosen, to live a committed life and forms them to be truly human. I am encouraged and given hope that the God who strengthened them will help me to form my spirit to respect people irrespective of all forms of divisions and obey the law that brings order in the society.
