Readings: 2Cor 4: 7-15; Mt 20: 20-28
The readings of today’s liturgy ask me not to worry much about earthly possessions which only give momentary pleasure. They invite me to take good care of the treasure which is given to me as grace in a clay jar. The jar is fragile, but the treasure is very precious. The treasure is the message of Love who is Jesus himself.
When I do not value the treasure of love, I become greedy, selfish, and stingy. When I do not share this treasure of love with others, I try only to acquire things for myself that may benefit only me in the future. I can compare myself with James and John and their mother who were worried about the future glory. They did not value the treasure that they had with them: Jesus the embodiment of love.
When I do value the treasure of love, I realize a part of myself that knows to give, sacrifice, and share. When I do share this treasure with others affliction, perplexity, and persecution may come into my life which in turn makes my relationship with Jesus strong. I find myself bearing fruits of love in my life.
I am encouraged by the readings not to worry about what I will do with my earthly possessions but to grow in the consciousness of loving and sharing the treasure of love in my life with others.
