As we call ourselves Christians, we are expected to possess sufficient knowledge about Christ. We need to know him as the word made flesh and dwelt among us. We must know what he proclaimed and taught. We need to understand that he died on the cross for our sins and was raised bodily from the dead. But beyond these facts, we need to experience him personally.
The gospel passage of the day communicates that Jesus is both David’s son and Lord which is quite difficult for the Jewish leaders to understand. Jesus through his preaching in the temple revealed that the promised Messiah is more than a political leader. The Jews at that time were waiting for a Messiah who would make Israel dominant. Jesus, knowing that his religious leaders missed the truth of the Messiah pointed out the identity by saying that he is not only a man but also the Lord from heaven. He wanted them to know that only God can bring forth perfect deliverance.
Probably an introspection may reveal that many of us have only little faith in Christ. It is difficult to believe and trust him when we do not know him well. We need to understand that Christianity is primarily a growing relationship with the infinite God who has revealed himself through our Lord Jesus Christ. We get to know him more intimately when we spend time with him in prayer and reflection. May we grow in our relationship with him to make him known, loved, and served.
