The readings invite us to have faith in Jesus so that we can endure moments of trials and tribulations.
In the gospel passage, we see Jesus walking toward his disciples on the water during a turbulent time on the sea of Galilee. The wind was blowing, and the waves were rising. Jesus chose to come to them at this moment, to help them get to the shore, and to teach them and all of us that no matter what storm we face in life, he will be there to save us in ways that are truly miraculous. Certainly, none of the disciples ever expected to see Jesus walking on the water in the middle of the night while the waves were crashing upon their boat.
But Jesus did this and spoke those words of comfort because he wanted us to know that no matter what struggle we face in life, he is always there coming to us in love, and will lead us safely to the shore of his peace. If fear is something we struggle with on a personal level, then let us turn our eyes to the reality of redemption.
The Father sent the Son into the world to save us. Jesus comes not only to teach, to inspire, and help, but also to save, to destroy death, fear, sin, and all that keeps us away from the Father. His saving act changes each and everyone in this world. If you and I desire to understand and believe in Jesus, then nothing can shake our faith and our life.
