In the gospel we see Jesus selecting seventy disciples and sending them on a mission. Jesus sends them as labourers into the field which he himself was entrusted with. We hire labourers to lighten the workload. Jesus was to save the world by dying on the cross. He commissions his disciples with a greater task to do. We as Christians are called to be his faithful labourers. We have the moral responsibility of spreading the good news to the people doesn’t know God and his kingdom.
Jesus does not say that the work is going to be easy. Rather he gives them a challenge to go before him and to be daring to face the difficulties. He does the role of a mission commander entrusting the workers with great responsibility. It is the trust and belief in the words of a commander that makes his soldiers go forward.
It is the same trust and faith in the words of Jesus that must make us go to the field where we are needed. It is the field of poverty where many live without proper food, shelter, clothing etc. It is the field where injustice prevails, illiteracy is common, illness and hunger prevail, social justice and equality are questioned, and dominated by hopelessness and depression. It is the field where people are abandoned by their own. Let us put our heart and soul to welcome them and help them through our words and actions.
