When I go to a place of pilgrimage what makes me wonder? More often I realize that it is the structure, the beauty of the place or the crowds that fascinate me. I hardly get the feeling that I should marvel and wonder at the presence of the Divine over there. In the gospel, people flocked to John the Baptist to experience him as a prophet and to listen to his preaching. I am invited to find the divine beyond the beauty of the physical world.
The Lord is compassionate as we read in the first reading. He loves me and grant me his peace even if the mountains depart. I am encouraged to belong to his kingdom in humility. Though in my humble state I may be the least in the eyes of others Jesus’ words of comfort make me believe that I will be raised in my lowliness.
The challenge to remain humble is big but as Christmas is coming, I need to fix my eyes on Jesus who showed his humility by choosing the stable as a place for his birth. His humble approach to humanity is seen in his very humble birth. His amazing example of true humility must influence my life and proclaim the truth and goodness of God.
