Humility: A Sign of Goodness

By Eldho Augustine, CSC –

Readings: Rom 12:5-16; Lk 14:15-24

The first reading tells us that though we are many, we are one body in union with Christ and we are all joined to each other as different parts of the same body. So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us. We are invited to be generous towards others with our talents or gifts which God has given us.

The gospel reading gives us the parable of the great feast. People who were invited for the feast did not come for it because of their selfish reasons. This happens in my life too. For my own selfish gains, I say excuses and act ungenerous towards others with my availability and time. With my presence one who invited me may be happy; as we see in the first reading ‘be happy with those who are happy, weep with those who weep’.

I need to be one with others in their good and bad times alike. So, let us use our Godgiven talents and gifts for the betterment of others. We can become one with others by forgetting our selfish motives and excuses and not being proud, but accepting the needs of others in humility.
