Today’s scriptures reveal the beauty and challenges of family life, the values that unite us, and the happiness that comes from meeting God in our midst. The Book of Sirach teaches us to respect and honour our parents, as they are the source of our moral formation. The passage urges us to see family as a school of virtue.
The second reading offers us a practical guide for living virtuously within our families. We are called to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness. These are the qualities that make our families strong and harmonious.
The gospel passage shows us the holy family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, as they celebrate a significant event in Jesus’ life: his presentation in the temple. There, they meet Simeon and Anna, two devout and hopeful people. Simeon recognizes Jesus as the “light for revelation to the Gentiles” and the “glory of Israel”, showing that Jesus is the saviour of all nations. Anna also praises God and thanks him for fulfilling his promise. She has spent her life in worship and waiting for this moment. These passages invite us to reflect on the holiness of our family relationships, the values that sustain our family bonds, and the joy that fills our hearts when we encounter God in our homes.
In this Christmas season, may we, like Simeon and Anna, eagerly await the presence of Christ among us. May our families be places of love, where the values described by Paul in Colossians thrive. As we gather in our domestic temples, may the light of Christ shine in our hearts, inspiring us to give thanks and praise.
