Inner Transformation is Key to Spiritual Journey

Readings: Gal 5: 1-6; Lk 11: 37-41

In the first reading, St. Paul reminds us that faith expresses itself through love. He is the one who first speaks of faith, hope, and love, virtues we receive at our Baptism. As we grow, we are called to strengthen these gifts; being strong in faith, unwavering in hope, and steadfast in love.

Each day offers us the opportunity to develop them further, as they ultimately lead us to union with God. It is essential that we actively nurture and practice these virtues throughout our lives. In the gospel, Jesus calls us to look deeply into our hearts, inviting us to cleanse and purify them so that we can recognize what truly matters in life. He teaches that our interior life in the Spirit is what is essential, shaping us into blessed people of faith.

This call to inner transformation is key to our spiritual journey. St. Teresa of Avila, whose feast we celebrate today, exemplifies this transformation through her spirituality, particularly in her emphasis on friendship with God and one another. She famously said that “prayer is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with God who we know loves us.” By becoming people of prayer, we deepen our friendship with God, allowing him to transform us from within. This inner transformation is what leads us to true spiritual growth and holiness.
