Verghese V Joseph –
On Christmas eve, New Delhi Archbishop Anil Joseph Couto offers an insightful perspective of the church in India being a David among today’s Goliaths.
Remember, in mid-2018, a letter from Archbishop Anil Couto to local churches surfaced suggesting priests start a prayer campaign before the national elections due next year. As is a normal practise, the church prays for the country, its leaders and also for the uplift of poor, downtrodden, marginalised and most importantly for the secular fabric of the country.
Not surprisingly, partisan political groups jumped in and were quick to twist this out of context. However, the gentle Archbishop was quite firm on his belief and convictions.
Much water has flown down the bridge, Indian Catholic Matters caught up with the Archbishop to gather his insights into the challenges the church faces and the way forward for the church in India. Click below to view the complete interview.
