Readings: Dan 6: 12 – 28; Lk 21:20 – 28
In my examination of conscience, I realized that my tendency is to seek pleasure and to avoid pain, to get away from discomfort, to get rid of uncomfortable people and situations. First reading portrays persistent prayer of prophet Daniel; even in the moment of persecutions he never gave up his personal prayer. And even when they put him in the den, he never gave up his faith in God. And the same faith saved him from that persecution.
In the gospel, Jesus himself foretold the destruction of Jerusalem, because the people of Jerusalem were not ready to come out of their comfort-zones. And they were running after the worldly pleasure forgetting the creator. They were not ready to repent their sinful lives. The second coming of Jesus reminds us to come out of our comfortable zones and repent our evil deeds.
As we are about to finish this liturgical year and approach the door of advent, let us realize that we are the people of God, and, like prophet Daniel, strong in faith and ready to face the persecution that will come our way. And let us be patient that he will grant us the strength that we need. When we invest our time in prayer, he repays us when we are in need.
